Shedd Aquarium Unveils Transformed Entry and Awe-Inspiring Hanging Sculpture

Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium recently announced the opening of an enhanced entry experience that greatly improves the physical accessibility of the historic building, while providing guests with more choice on how to begin their journey to the aquatic world. The transformed entry is part of a new Welcome Plaza that will include more activated garden space, pop-up programming for Museum Campus visitors and a new external ticketing pavilion.

Shedd Aquarium Beluga Whale, NAYA, Gives Birth

Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium welcomed a new resident to the Abbott Oceanarium on Wednesday evening: a beluga whale calf born to 35-year-old mother, Naya (NI-yah). Earlier that day, the animal care team recognized signs that Naya was going into labor and closed the Secluded Bay habitat to guests. Hours later, shortly after 6 p.m., the calf was born and took its first breath of air at the water’s surface shortly after – a crucial first step for belugas.

National Geographic Live’s “Coral Kingdoms and Empires of Ice” Comes to Auditorium Theatre

On Sunday, April 30 at 2 p.m., Auditorium Theatre will present National Geographic Live’s “Coral Kingdom and Empires of Ice” with photographic team David Doubilet and Jennifer Hayes. Vice President of Conservation Research at Chicago’s own Shedd Aquarium, Dr. Chuck Knapp, will introduce the speakers and host a Q&A providing audience members the valuable opportunity to talk directly with Doubilet and Hayes.

Shedd Aquarium Plans to Safely Reopen to the Public on January 27

Following the announcement from Governor Pritzker on January 18 concerning Chicago’s shift to Tier 2 COVID-19 mitigation standards, Shedd Aquarium announced that it is prepared to safely reopen to its members on Wednesday, January 27. Members will enjoy three full days of exclusive access before the aquarium reopens to the general public on Saturday, January 30.
